How to Apply

If you are a Senior in High School or recently graduated from High School, there are two basic ways to participate in the Naval ROTC program at the University of Missouri-Columbia or Columbia College and pursue a commission in the Navy or Marine Corps:

Obviously, most students would prefer the full scholarship, but not all students are eligible (at least not when they first enter the program). Click on the links above to determine which option you should pursue.

In addition there are some other scholarship programs for individuals:

  • Interested in specific fields of study
  • Who do not meet the eligibility criteria discussed above
  • Who are interested in careers in Navy Nursing

NROTC SCHOLARSHIPS

SCHOLARSHIP BENEFITS

  • Full tuition at UMC or Columbia College
  • All college/university educational fees
  • $375 Stipend for text books each semester
  • Provides all uniforms
  • Provides all Naval Science textbooks
  • Subsistence allowance each academic month as follows:
ACADEMIC YEAR MONTHLY ALLOWANCE
Freshmen $250
Sophomore $300
Junior $350
Senior $400

  • Students attend 3-5 week Summer Cruises each year
  • Minimum active duty service obligation is four years

4 YEAR SCHOLARSHIP ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Not less than 17 years old by Sept. 1 of year starting college and no more than 23 on June 30 of that year
  • Physically qualified by Navy or Marine Corps standards
  • Achieve qualifying score on ACT or SAT exam:
    • Navy (including Nurse-option):
      • SAT: 530 verbal; 520 math
      • ACT: 22 verbal; 22 math
    • Marine Corps:
      • SAT: 1000 composite (math+verbal)
      • ACT: 45 composite
  • SAT/ACT math and English scores must be from same test; applicants cannot combine best math with best English scores to achieve qualifying score
  • No more than 30 semester hours of college credit upon application
  • Be accepted to the University of Missouri - Columbia or Columbia College

HOW TO APPLY FOR 4 YEAR SCHOLARSHIP

 
Complete the following Online NROTC Application. You will be contacted by an Officer Recruiter who will help complete your application package. If you have questions concerning the MU NROTC specifically, contact us. If you are not awarded an NROTC Scholarship, you can still apply for the College Program.
 

NROTC COLLEGE PROGRAM

COLLEGE PROGRAM BENEFITS

  • Provides all uniforms
  • Provides all Naval Science textbooks
  • Subsistence allowance last two years as follows:
ACADEMIC YEAR MONTHLY ALLOWANCE
Junior $350
Senior $400
  • Students attend a Summer Cruises after junior year
  • Minimum active duty service obligation is three years

COLLEGE PROGRAM ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Must be at least 16 years of age on 30 June of the year the student is enrolled
  • High school GPA-minimum 2.3 (4.0) / College GPA-minimum 2.0 (4.0)
  • Cannot have started sophomore year of college (except for 2 year program - see below)
  • No apparent physically disqualifying factors
  • Must meet the Height/Weight requirements
  • Cannot be awaiting trial or sentence, be on probation, or under suspended sentence

Students who have been in the College Program for at least one semester, are in good standing, and that meet the scholarship eligibility requirements may be submitted for the NROTC scholarship for their remaining semesters

Complete and submit the following contact form. We will e-mail you a password that will allow you to access the application. Once you have a password, go to the application here. Print the application packet and follow all instruction.
 

OTHER PROGRAMS

NAVY NURSING PROGRAM

  • Available to students pursuing a BSN
  • 4 year scholarships are available
  • Students may also enter College Program and try out for the scholarship
  • On graduation, NROTC Scholarship Nurse Option midshipmen are commissioned in the Navy Nurse Corps
  • Students attend two Summer Training periods of 4 weeks each
  • Minimum active duty service obligation is four years

2 YEAR SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

  • Provides full scholarship benefits (see above) for final two years of college
  • Students must apply during their sophomore year (or 3rd year of a 5 year program)
  • Students attend a 6 week course at the Naval Science Institute (NSI) in the summer before starting their junior year
  • Applicants must have completed Calc I (and preferably Calc II)
  • Students attend a Summer Cruise after junior year
  • Minimum active duty service obligation is four years

2 YEAR COLLEGE PROGRAM

  • Provides monthly Subsistence allowance (see above) for final two years of college
  • Students must apply during their sophomore year (or 3rd year of a 5 year program)
  • Students attend a 6 week course at the Naval Science Institute (NSI) in the summer before starting their junior year
  • Students attend a Summer Cruise after junior year
  • Minimum active duty service obligation is three years
HOW TO APPLY FOR 2 YEAR PROGRAMS
 
Complete and submit the following contact form. The MU NROTC Recruiting Officer will contact you with further instructions. The application must be submitted by March 15th of your sophomore year. It is recommended that you contact us as soon as your Fall semester grades come out.
 

TWEEDALE SCHOLARSHIP

  • Focused on students majoring in specific technical fields:
    • Engineering
    • Chemistry
    • Mathematics
    • Physics
    • Computer Science
  • Student must have completed at least one but no more than four academic terms w/ a cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) which places student above peer mean or 3.0, whichever is higher
  • Transcript must reflect grade of "C" or better in all courses attempted
  • Student must have completed one academic term of college level math or science
  • Students interviewed by the Professor of Naval Science (PNS) and must comply w/ standards regarding leadership potential and military/physical fitness
  • Students attend Summer Cruises each remaining summer
  • Minimum active duty service obligation is four years

Columbia College

Students at Columbia College can participate in Mizzou Naval ROTC through the cross-town enrollment program. They attend Naval Science classes on the MU campus and fully participate in the NROTC program. Columbia College also offers a limited number of room and board grants for students on ROTC scholarships.
